Poker tip and important lesson for life – subjugation of the ego

Beating strong foes wins much respect and little money. Beating weak foes wins little respect and much money.

This is a quote from Super System 2 from chapter 5 – Tips from Mike Caro University (Tip 14).

Poker theory says you don’t have to be a good poker player to make money. You just have to be better than your opponents and you’ll win in the long run. You can be a mediocre player but if you’re playing against terrible players, you’ll make a profit in the long run. (The truth of the matter is however that it doesn’t matter what Poker Theory says, G-d decides who wins and who loses.)

This lesson can teach us about life. It teaches us subjugation of the ego.

We see another example of this in Batman The Dark Knight. Harvey Dent claims he’s the real Batman and the police arrest him. Batman just stands watching silently. Rachel Dawes asks Alfred Pennyworth why the real Batman (Bruce Wayne) didn’t hand himself in and is letting Harvey be arrested? Alfred responds:

Perhaps both Bruce and Mr.Dent believe that Batman stands for something more important than a terrorist’s whims, Miss Dawes, even if everyone hates him for it. That’s the sacrifice he’s making- to not be a hero. To be something more.

The same idea comes up in Schindler’s List:

Oskar Schindler: Power is when we have every justification to kill, and we don’t.

Amon Goeth: You think that’s power?

Oskar Schindler: That’s what the Emperor said. A man steals something, he’s brought in before the Emperor, he throws himself down on the ground. He begs for his life, he knows he’s going to die. And the Emperor… pardons him. This worthless man, he lets him go.

Amon Goeth: I think you are drunk.

Oskar Schindler: That’s power, Amon. That is power.

This is also the idea in the first Mishna of the fourth chapter of Ethics of the Fathers:

Who is strong? One who overpowers his inclinations. As is stated (Proverbs 16:32), “Better one who is slow to anger than one with might, one who rules his spirit than the captor of a city.”

This idea is also mentioned in the Talmud. A man comes to a fork in the road and both roads will take you home just as quickly. the first road has improperly dressed women bathing on the side of the road, whereas the second road is deserted. Do you take the first road and not look or the second road and give the test?
The Talmud says you take the second road. The ego wants to take the first road and not look so it can say look what I achieved. Life isn’t about being dramatic. Take the second road.

People would get along much better if they could put their egos to the side more often. There would be fewer arguments if people could just admit they’re wrong sometimes.

Consider this message deeply.

PS – This lesson will also help poker players that bluff way too much and call way too much. Stop trying to be a hero. Fold.

Life update

I haven’t played poker for money for a few months now, but whenever I hear about people winning a lot of money playing poker I get jealous. I know two people that have won a lot and have even appeared on TV. Both are in the year above and I used to play with them. One of them won a $250,000 event, has won a lot online and drives an £80,000 Audi R8.

I’ve realized over the last few months that I enjoyed the respect people gave me for being a big winner, more than the money I was actually making. Both were attractive, but I think I valued the respect more. Yes… I’m a funny guy, most people would enjoy the money a lot more, but not me.

I can understand a bit better now why celebrities are so desperate to stay popular and for people to know who they are. Maybe not… they’re not interested in respect. They just want to be popular.

Won $2.6k today!

Yesssssss. Feels so good.

I won $2.2k since my last post. I think I have been playing well throughout although luck always seems to be on my side in the long run.

I feel unstoppable. I’m the king of the world!

My bankroll is now approimately $27k. An all time high. Hope to be reach $30k and play some $1kNL before I go off to Israel next week (6 days left!).

Brian Townsend is a legend. He lost $3million dollars in the past month and this is what he has to say about it:

Been really enjoying my social life and spending a lot of quality time with my buddies. Life is good and I am going to appreciate it because there will be tougher times in the future.

Brian is a remarkable guy. I aspire to be like him.

I’m considering buying a laptop for Israel so that I can play while I’m there. I’m going to first see what it’s like there and if I will actually be able to play before I make the purchase. If I get one, I’ll get an Intel Mac from the US and I’ll play poker using Boot Camp (let’s you run Windows on a mac).

Two more quotes to round of, that have inspired me recently:

The journey brings us happiness, not the destination – from Peaceful Warrior.

The smarter you are, the more susceptible you are to suggestion (ie. you are more gullible) – from some guy from NY that I met on the street. I don’t know if it is true, but whatever. It sounds nice and it’s a good reply if anyone ever says you’re gullible.

I went to France for 2 days. I got back this morning.

We went on a road trip. My friend drove.

We it 151MPH in his done up Mini Cooper S Works. Surely a record.

We broke so many rules in France, we went through 100 red lights and got flashed at least once.

In my last post I mentioned I lost $2.5k in 50 minutes. I played another session later in the day and I lost another $500. I was now down $3k in a day. Later in the day, I played another session and I won $1.4k back, so I was only down a total of $1.6k for the day. This made me feel really good.

I took a $600 stack back off a  player that had taken maybe $2k off me that day. Flop was J72. He cbets. I call. Turn is a 4. He bets. I push (it wasn’t an overbet, pot was big by now). He calls with QJ. lol. I had 74 for the turned 2 pair and stacked him.

I’m going to play more now. Haven’t played for a few days now.

iPhone gambling rumors are false

Earlier in the week I reported that the iPhone will come preinstalled with Full Tilt (real money online poker). These rumors have turned out to be false.

Apple were thinking of making a deal with Full Tilt, but Apple declined out as they felt it would be bad for the iPhone’s “reputation”. I agree with Apples decision. Would have been nice for the poker players among us though.

Finished exams!

I just finished my exams! In general my exams didn’t go too well, but the one I had today. I think I will get AAAB. I was hoping for AAAA though.

I will now be playing poker for 6 weeks straight. 40 hours a week.

My goal is to reach a bank roll of $50k. I’m currently on $12k.

Apple iPhone to include online gambling and poker sponsor

The iPhone will come preinstalled with Full Tilt online poker software.

Strange move by Apple – especially since Steve Jobs is against gambling.

Full Tilt Poker made an offer that Apple “couldn’t refuse”. I think a lot of money must be involved in this deal. There seems no other logical explanation for this. Apple will probably take a large percentage of the money FT take from this deal.

I will have further updates later today. This news was reported by a personal conversation with Apple board member Bill Campbell. This news comes with the news of the iPhone supporting MS Word and Excel.

What are others thoughts on this?
